WE WILL CONTINUE WORKING OUTSIDE THE MAIN CAMPUS IF WE NEED TO

I wish to invite you all to rest this weekend and be ready to get back to extension courses this Tuesday at 6:00 a.m in Cabecera.

The courses taking place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m which had been scheduled to take place at the main campus have been moved to Instituto Tecnológico.

If we don´t see a way of getting back to the main campus next Saturday, we´ll resort to the gracious offer of Instituto Tecnológico and Colegio Militar.

Poll´s results

CELEBRATING TEACHERS DAY

Due to the difficult times we faced last week and the uncertainty of being able to go in everyday, the gift we have for you is still in store.

THE BOARD WILL SELECT THE NEW RECTOR OUT OF FOUR CANDIDATES

Jaime Alberto Camacho, Jaime Calderón, Oscar Vanegas and Hector Hernández in that order were voted by Professors, Administrative personnel, and Students to be the final candidates among which the Board will select one to be appointed Rector. The Board will meet this Tuesday, and the announcement of the name of the new Rector will be known at noon.

ALEJANDRO WAS BORN ON SATURDAY

Claudia Nieto and Alejandro are doing well and will enjoy each other´s company for the following months. In the meantime, Luz Mary Quintero will join the academic team. Our warmest welcome to her too. She will be coordinating Cabecera and will be working on several new projects with us.  We look forward to her contributions.

TAKE A FEW SECONDS AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONAIRE ON THE RIGHT

Your views are important to us, tell us what you think we need to do to improve the quality of our programs. There are five choices to select from. If you wish to suggest a different option, write it in the COMMENTS SECTION at the bottom of the blog.

NEW OFFICE, NEW WAYS

The new office will open this week, but that is just the beginning of several changes we´ll be implementing to serve everyone  better. To begin with, the audiovisual aids will be handed in through the window installed next to the Resource Center. The RC will now enjoy a more appropriate atmosphere for students to sit and work on their autonomous learning. A software has been install in the PC´s to time their use. The RC is a quite place to study and to present exams. We appreciate your being quite during the moments you choose to stay inside.

New card locks will be installed in the rooms with IT resources, and they are expected to be ready this week also. You will be given a personal card to open those doors. Care for it as you care for your bank teller card. Your card has your personal information; every time it opens a door, a computer registers your entrance and you become responsible for the inventory inside the roon. So don´t lend it to anyone. Carry it in your wallet. If it gets stolen, you need to inform us right away to block it out. Remember that you are responsible for it.

We are also working on a total change to our administrative and information system. The new information system will be fully working by the end of April 2010. Changes in the curriculum are also been discussed. Let us know all the suggestions you have; your opinions are of great importance to the success of the program and the quality of your working conditions.

UIS STUDENTS WILL EVALUATE YOU THIS TERM

I consider it of the upmost importance for you to read carefully the assessment instrument that the UIS will use to evaluate your performance in curricular courses this term, and requested a sample from "Vicerectoría" to make it available to you. I encourage you to download it and read it carefully. A copy of the assessment format will be posted at the board in the Teacher´s room.

STUDENTS COMPLAINING ON THE WEB

As part of the quality system we are all implementing at the UIS, THERE IS an Office called "Control de Gestion" that receives all the complaints related to our service. Those complaints or questions are immediately sent to me and I have to post a reply as soon as possible. This past week, I have received three complaints, two of which are related to teacher’s not covering the entire units of the program. I strongly recommend you time and plan your units very carefully to ensure we deliver what we have promised.

In the Saturday program, the complaints are made in person by some parents and through anonymous notes by others. We follow all of them up to verify them and have found out they are accurate in regards to the high notes given by some teachers.

A strict teacher decides certain students are not up-to-standard in a course, and their parents complain of not having being informed by previous teachers. We check their files and we discover they have being given very high scores. The solution is not to flunk everyone, but to make sure our teaching is well prepared and delivered. It is also our duty to refer them to the tutor on time. I have been reviewing your grading history, and already have a list of teachers whose grades are systematically high...it is hard to believe they are so lucky that their students are always so outstanding.

Remember inform parents on time of the problems your students have, don´t wait to the end of the cycle, recommend them actions to take, and if possible, ask for a tutoring session. If there is a large group of students having problems, let the coordinator know.

This is a friendly reminder of our ethical responsibilities towards our students and their families who are making a great financial effort to register in our courses and who have come to us because they trust our reputation, a reputation that benefits the Institution but us as teachers as well.
