UIS STUDENTS WILL EVALUATE YOU THIS TERM

I consider it of the upmost importance for you to read carefully the assessment instrument that the UIS will use to evaluate your performance in curricular courses this term, and requested a sample from "Vicerectoría" to make it available to you. I encourage you to download it and read it carefully. A copy of the assessment format will be posted at the board in the Teacher´s room.

STUDENTS COMPLAINING ON THE WEB

As part of the quality system we are all implementing at the UIS, THERE IS an Office called "Control de Gestion" that receives all the complaints related to our service. Those complaints or questions are immediately sent to me and I have to post a reply as soon as possible. This past week, I have received three complaints, two of which are related to teacher’s not covering the entire units of the program. I strongly recommend you time and plan your units very carefully to ensure we deliver what we have promised.

In the Saturday program, the complaints are made in person by some parents and through anonymous notes by others. We follow all of them up to verify them and have found out they are accurate in regards to the high notes given by some teachers.

A strict teacher decides certain students are not up-to-standard in a course, and their parents complain of not having being informed by previous teachers. We check their files and we discover they have being given very high scores. The solution is not to flunk everyone, but to make sure our teaching is well prepared and delivered. It is also our duty to refer them to the tutor on time. I have been reviewing your grading history, and already have a list of teachers whose grades are systematically high...it is hard to believe they are so lucky that their students are always so outstanding.

Remember inform parents on time of the problems your students have, don´t wait to the end of the cycle, recommend them actions to take, and if possible, ask for a tutoring session. If there is a large group of students having problems, let the coordinator know.

This is a friendly reminder of our ethical responsibilities towards our students and their families who are making a great financial effort to register in our courses and who have come to us because they trust our reputation, a reputation that benefits the Institution but us as teachers as well.
